Origin and History
Quantnotes.com was a collaborative project co-founded by Dr. Henry Tang, a mechanical engineer, and Dr. Raffaele Vardavas and Dr. Alessio Farhadi, both physicists — all PhD students at Imperial College London at the time. Dr. Vardavas completed his Imperial PhD in 2002. The site grew out of a shared intellectual interest in mathematical models and methods from statistical physics applied to the rapidly growing field of quantitative finance.

In the early 2000s, quantitative finance had become one of the primary destinations for applied mathematicians and physicists leaving academia, particularly in London where the City offered substantial demand for people who could handle the mathematics of derivative pricing and risk. The transition was intellectually natural but practically difficult: rigorous, mathematically honest introductions to stochastic calculus and derivative pricing were not easy to find. Quantnotes was built to fill that gap — assuming mathematical maturity but no prior finance background, building from first principles through random walks, Itô calculus, the Black-Scholes framework, the Greeks, and volatility modeling. There were no YouTube tutorials, no MOOCs, and little freely accessible material of this kind online at the time.
At its peak the site attracted approximately 6,000–7,000 weekly sessions, built entirely through word of mouth in academic and practitioner communities. It was eventually discontinued as the founders moved on to other roles and projects. For Dr. Vardavas, Quantnotes represented the beginning of a sustained engagement with quantitative modeling at the intersection of mathematics, simulation, and decision-making — an intellectual thread that continues through CausalPaths Analytics and his quantitative portfolio analytics research ↗.

Alongside its technical articles, Quantnotes.com ran a popular Edutainment section: a collection of brain teasers, logic puzzles, and mathematical problems organized by difficulty. The puzzles range from lateral-thinking and arithmetic challenges at the Easy level, through probability and geometry at Intermediate, to genuinely hard problems requiring careful multi-step reasoning. The full collection — questions and worked answers — has been recovered from the Wayback Machine archive.
